Homer was a blind writer. He composed the Iliad, an epic about Achilles. He also wrote the Odyssey, which was about Odysseus' voyage back home. Much is unknown about Homer himself. The historian, Herodotus, estimated Homer was born around 850 B.C.E. since the Iliad contains the story about the Trojan War.

Hesiod was known for writing epic Greek poems. Little is known about his personal life through his writing, other than that he lived in a Boeotian village and was a shepherd. His major works are Theogony and Works and Days. Theogany tells us the evolution of Greek gods. Works and Days is about a dispute between Hesiod and Perses, his brother.

The Odyssey

The Odyssey was a great epic written by Homer. It is mainly about Odysseus' voyage back home. There are many themes presented in the epic, three of them which are very significant to the plot. The first one is the value of maintaining a good reputation, both with humans and gods. Book 1, The Iliad, states that Odysseus is respected by all the gods except Poseidon. This caused him difficulty returning home. The second theme is the role of revenge in earning justice. Back when societies did not have police, court systems, or prisons, gods who had human characteristics, often helped them to achieve justice. The third and final theme of The Odyssey is how power is earned and maintained. This is shown when young Telemachus tries to take the throne.
